Mackenzi trains at Shukokai Karate in Queenstown.
Every story is unique, this is her story: “My karate journey started off with me and my brother just going for self-defence. I was a timid little thing who hardly said a word, but that all changed when I first stepped out on the mat.
My main achievements are being selected into the New Zealand Team and holding several National and Regional Titles.
Losing my competition coach was one of the greatest difficulties I had to overcome. He always believed in me and was a huge part of my life journey. At the time, little did I know how strong this would make me. I became even more determined to achieve the goals we had set together. With the help of my Sensei and other Sensei’s from Auckland and Christchurch, I began the next chapter of my karate journey. Without their support I wouldn’t be where I am today.
There have been times where I thought it was all too hard, but my genuine love of karate along with my self movitiation and support from family and friends have kept me going.
Not only am I competing myself but I have the honour of coaching younger students in competition helping them reach their goals. Karate has taken me to several countries which has taught me about different cultures and given me the opportunity to make life long friends. Karate has taught me respect, responsibility and resilience, which I can apply to my everyday life.” - @mackenzi_karate
